American Idol and politics. They don't really go together. Yes, there are some politics within any specific
American Idol season, but on a national level, there's not much. I could try and argue some far-fetched point about who you supported last season (
David Cook or
David Archuleta) says something about your political leanings, but no one wants that.
Chris Daughtry, the most famed runner-up in
American Idol history, is entering the realm of national politics in a roundabout sort of way. Daughtry has teamed up with CNN to create the theme song for the cable news networks' League of First Time Voters initiative. League of First Time Voters is meant to get first time voters excited and motivated for November's presidential election between Barack Obama and John McCain. For the initiative, Daughtry recorded his own take on Foreigner's 1977 hit “Feels Like the First Time.”
Daughtry recorded his version of the song in April, with the blessing of Mick Jones, member of Foreigner and the man who wrote “Feels Like the First Time.” Daughtry's version will appear on the upcoming re-release of his debut album Daughtry, which sold 400 billion copies worldwide.
Jones was very happy that Chris Daughtry was the one to to cover his song, saying "It's a song that requires a really strong voice to carry it off, and he's got the range and the power to really do it convincingly. I don't think there are that many singers around at the moment that could really nail it. Out of all the singers of that style, he's the strongest. He's just a great singer all around. It doesn't matter what style it is, he could pretty much sing anything."
Pretty high praise for a former
American Idol contestant. It's interesting (and quite funny) that CNN has decided to use a song that's about a woman who makes a man feel like he's losing his virginity all over again to get people excited about voting. What kind of message is CNN trying to send here? That voting is orgasmic? Will MSNBC respond by getting Katherine McPhee to cover "Like a Virgin?" Or maybe FOX News will get
Jason Castro to cover Jimmy Buffet's "Let's Get Drunk and Screw." That'd make about as much sense.
Regardless, it's a quality Foreigner song, and one that I'm sure Daughtry pulled off well.
