I don't know what to make of the
Clay Aiken baby scenario, but then I don't really know what to make of Clay Aiken in general. He simultaneously repulses and frightens me, but I know that there are many fans of the
American Idol runner-up who would disagree. Back in May, it was announced that Aiken helped his 50-year-old record producer and friend, Jaymes Foster, get pregnant through artificial insemination. What once sounded like a rehash of a
Will & Grace plot line is now a reality, as the Clay baby was delivered at 8:08am today. Parker Foster Aiken was born at the singer's home in North Carolina, and tipped the scales at 6 pounds 2 ounces.
Aiken's mother, Faye, revealed the big news to Raleigh, NC TV station WRAL this morning. In addition to announcing the birth, she mentioned that the mother, father and newborn are all doing fine, and that Aiken's son came into the world with a nice patch of dark hair. The current
Spamalot star plans to co-parent little Parker, who came into the world 19 inches long. Aiken's mother said that her son "is smiling from ear to ear" over the big news.
Aiken himself posted an entry on his blog confirming the birth. "My dear friend, Jaymes, and I are so excited to announce the birth of Parker Foster Aiken (No hyphens. One first name. One middle name. One last name)," he wrote. "The little man is healthy, happy, and as loud as his daddy. Mama Jaymes is doing quite well also. The Aiken family, the Foster family, and the Parker family are all thrilled."
As unusual as the Aiken situation is, I suppose I can understand it. If my 50-year-old record producer asked me to help her have a baby, but I had a reputation for being completely innocent and virginal, maybe I'd help her out with artificial insemination. I haven't been faced with that scenario yet, so who knows how I'd react. One thing is for certain: the former
American Idol contestant will likely be a great father.
