America's Best Dance Crew 2: Top 2 Best and Worst Performances
Saturday, August 16, 2008

This week on America's Best Dance Crew 2, SoReal Cru and Super Cr3w had three chances to perform to win the hearts of the voting public. The crews worked through three challenges, one incorporated global dance, one that let them design their own dance craze to an original song, and one that would be their last chance to show the audience why they should be America's Best Dance Crew.

I was originally considering making this Best and Worst column even-handed and equal, picking one Best and one Worst from each crew. But you know what? One routine was so far out ahead of anything else I saw that night, I just can't do it. I have to pick just one.

BEST

I was so completely in awe of what Super Cr3w did for their global dance challenge, especially considering how much focus there has been on their b-boy moves trumping their ability to other kinds of dance. The way the crew approached each geographic area reinforced to me why I love this crew so much: they might call themselves “Super” but they still come across as humble when it comes to respecting their chosen form of expression. Of course they incorporated b-boy moves into each section, but they also showcased the moves of the area with a sincere respect in a way that still felt organic and exciting.

I was dumbfounded when the judges (well, Lil' Mama and JC Chasez) found so much to criticize and wondered if they had seen the same performance that I had. It wasn't just a great and entertaining routine, it was also just inspiring in a general sense to see the creativity and dedication these guys bring to every performance. I love Super Cr3w so much, yes, I kind of want to marry it.

WORST

On the other hand, I felt that SoReal Cru's global dance performance was a real disappointment. Now, some folks have been incensed that SoReal Cru made it this far, but I have to say I've always really liked this group a lot. I was excited to see how they would interpret each dance style. While their creativity has never been as explosive as Super Cr3w, they have a detailed thoughtfulness that I still appreciate. But it didn't seem like they brought that to this routine, and even I could see how the individual dancers struggled. I think SoReal Cru is a great group of dancers, and I'm glad they made it as far as they did, but if they win over Super Cr3w, I'm going to have to have a stern talking-to with the American public.

We'll find out what that public thought on next week's finale of America's Best Dance Crew 2.
