The eighth season of
Smallville premieres one month from today, which means it's finally time for me to start dreaming about what I want to see in the new season. My first order of business when putting together this list was to rule out anything that seemed entirely implausible. There probably won't be an appearance from Bruce Wayne in season 8, nor do I expect Clark and Lana to run off to Barbados and get married. Then I ruled out things I don't really care about, like whether Kara (
Laura Vandervoort) escapes from the Phantom Zone. Afterwards, I was left with five things that might actually happen when
Smallville returns. Read on for the list.
5. The Return of Lex
When they appeared at the San Diego Comic-Con the new
Smallville showrunners claimed that Lex will be back, but they neglected to mention any specific plans for
Michael Rosenbaum to return. There also hasn't been any word leaked to the press about the actor appearing on the show, which is a bit worrisome. Lex is a huge part of the
Smallville universe, and while the addition of new villains will certainly lessen the impact of his absence, no one can truly replace Rosenbaum. If season 8 ends up being the last season of the show and they don't resolve things with Lex, I'll be one angry fan.
4. Doomsday Kills Clark
The
Smallville writers have already admitted that they're taking some liberties with the Doomsday character in season 8. Instead of being a massive, indestructible alien beast, he's now a charming paramedic with a shady past. Those changes may work, but the one thing they have to retain is Doomsday killing Clark. That's the only thing the comic book villain is known for, so I see no reason to bring him into the series if he doesn't succeed in offing the future Man of Steel. It should be temporary, of course, but it has to happen to keep comic book fans such as myself happy.
3. Less Romantic Drama
Should Clark end up with Lana, Chloe or Lois? Who cares? Now that
Kristin Kreuk has left the show, I hope the writers take this opportunity to drop some of the romantic drama. Clark has to end up with Lois eventually, so I'd rather see their relationship begin to develop without useless distractions. Either that, or simply leave Clark without any romantic entanglements for the season. I'm probably not going to get my wish, but I can dream.
2. More of Green Arrow and His Amazing Friends
We know we'll see more of Green Arrow now that Justin Hartley is a series regular, but I also want to see more of the Justice League. A few members will be showing up in the premiere, and it'd be nice to see them return throughout the season. However, I don't want the series to become a showcase for other heroes. This is still Clark's story, and I hope that the writers remember that even when bringing in exciting guest stars.
1. Clark Embraces His Destiny
Smallville loves to tease us with hints about Clark's future as Superman, but after seven seasons I think it's finally time to move the character toward his destiny. I want to see Clark assuming a dual identity, taking flight, and more than anything else, being a hero. It seems like the supporting characters often get to save the day more than the Man of Steel himself, and it's time for that to change. I'm not asking for red and blue tights, but having a bit more Superman in
Smallville certainly wouldn't hurt.
